Strengthening polymer welding skills through industry collaboration

The Plastics Industry Pipe Association of Australia (PIPA) is proud to support ongoing collaboration across industry to strengthen training outcomes in the polymer sector. A key milestone in this effort is the current public consultation led by the Manufacturing Industry Skills Alliance (MISA) for the Polymer Technician and Processing Project within the Plastics, Rubber and Cablemaking (PMB) Training Package.

Running from 5 May to 2 June 2026, this consultation reflects the collective expertise of industry stakeholders working together to ensure training products remain relevant, safe and aligned with modern practices.

Industry has identified important updates required across several polymer welding units. These changes are critical, particularly given that polymer pipe welding is often performed in environments where failure can result in significant impacts on:

  • Environmental protection
  • Human health and safety
  • Infrastructure reliability

The project focuses on improving clarity and consistency within training by:

  • Differentiating pipe sizes within units of competency
  • Aligning requirements with current industry practices and Australian Standards
  • Ensuring training reflects real-world application and risk management

As part of this review, two core units of competency are being revised with strong input from PIPA members:

  • PMBWELD301E – Join polyethylene plastic pipelines using butt welding
  • PMBWELD302E – Join polyethylene plastic pipelines using electrofusion welding

These units are fundamental to workforce capability in the pipeline sector. Contributions from experienced practitioners have been essential in ensuring the updates reflect current techniques, technologies and safety expectations.

PIPA encourages all members and industry participants to engage in the consultation process. Reviewing the draft materials and providing feedback—whether in support or with suggested improvements—helps ensure the final outcomes meet the needs of the sector.

MISA is also hosting information sessions during the consultation period to provide further insights and support engagement:

  • Session 1: 13 May 2026 | 10:00am – 11:00am
  • Session 2: 19 May 2026 | 2:00pm – 3:00pm
