One of the many benefits of PVC pipe is its resistance to root intrusions. Due to fewer joints, their flexibility and the interface or contact pressure exerted by the seal on the pipe – PVC joints are less likely to leak.
TP001 – The resistance of elastomeric seal pipe joints to tree root penetration provides an overview of extensive trails undertaken by the CSIRO and PIPA members comparing the resistance of clay, concrete, and PVC pipe joints in root penetration under accelerated conditions. It was concluded that PVC elastomeric seal joints markedly outperformed FRC and VC pipe joints.
Tree root penetration of pipeline systems can result in seepage into pipelines, environment impacts such as flooding of sewerage treatment plants and erosion around the pipeline system.
